Used to scale subgingivally (remove calculus below the gum line and in periodontal pockets) and to perform root planning (remove redundant, necrotic cementum). They may also be used supragingivally to remove light calculus deposits Periodontal pockets (deeper than 2mm) should be cleaned with hand instruments (A curette) rather than power scalers. How to use The instrument is held in a modified pen grip. The toe is placed against the tooth surface with the flat face at 90 degrees so that sharp edge contacts. Repeat overlapping stokes are used. The movement is from the base of the periodontal pocket towards the tip of the crown.
